What is Organic Food – The Many Benefits of Organic Food

What is Organic Food – The Many Benefits of Organic Food — www.noahhammond.com Today is about health and why you absolutely, without a doubt, must start buying and eating organic food only. This is something that I just woke up to, I would say about a year ago. I know a lot of people are still in the dark about this so I felt that it was really something that I had to get out there. This is REALLY important and it is going to save you potentially a lot of strife down the road and a lot of health problems. The Benefits of Organic Food — More than Health! The first obvious benefit is simply nutrition. The way that industrial farming is done, they plant the same crop on the same soil over and over and over and over again. They stuff it full of fertilizers and they do not allow the natural cycle of composting, decomposing, and crop cycling to occur. The way farming is supposed to be done is you farm a crop and then you allow the soil to replenish by composting and rejuvenating it with lots and lots of nutrients. To do that, you must allow organic material to decompose there. Then, you plant another crop and you cycle the crops so that you can keep doing this. In industrial farming, they do the exact opposite which is planting the same crops in the soil continuously. If you can compare this to anything, it would be trying to get all of your nutrition from vitamins only. It simply does not work. Your body cant take only vitamins and get what it needs. In fact, vitamins are <b>…<b>

Genetically engineered foods; are they cool? When I think of modern science resembling sci-fi movies from when I was a child, I get excited. However, then I realize this is realty and we are responsible for doing whats right. We live with the consequences of when we don’t. This has me concerned about genetically engineered food. As a result I am not too sure about genetically engineered foods, but lets explore the facts.

Genetically engineered foods (also know as bio-engineered) are defined as having had foreign genes (like ones from other plants or animals) inserted into their genetic codes. These foods were introduced in 1996. In 1996, 7 percent of soy and 1 percent of corn was genetically engineered. Presently the numbers have grown to 94 percent for soy and 88 percent for corn. Some claims of benefits of genetically engineered foods include: more nutritious food, tastier food, disease and drought resistant plants that require fewer environmental resources (water, fertilizer, etc.), decreased use of pesticides, increased supply of food with reduced cost and longer shelf life, faster growing plants and animals, food with more desirable traits, and foods that can be used as medications. Some of this may be true, but these benefits come with a variety of adverse effects. Many of these benefits are derived from organically produced foods without the adverse effects but at a higher cost. By allowing this the FDA, USDA, and EPA show concern for the corporations producing these foods rather than for the consumer. GE foods do not have to be labeled as such. Organically produced foods do not allow genetic modification. Continue reading »

I recently started to ask some of our readers to contact me with  topics that they wanted me to write about. A reader named Justin had a wonderful idea and raised this question: What is being healthy really worth? We write about a lot of  subjects that relate to health and nutrition here at organicallythought.com. I think any one of those subjects could raise the question “How much does that cost?”. I will admit from personal experience that it is not always cost effective to do what is best for your health. It may even be financially impossible for some people to take on every one of my suggestions. I will make one thing clear, it is never our intention for anyone to follow all of our recommendations (especially if they can’t afford it). The best thing one can get from this blog is a total understanding of what is healthy. How you execute being healthy is up to you. The more you know about health and nutrition the better chance you have to prioritize what you can do. Lets take some time to shed some light on the cost of being healthy. Continue reading »

Peter Brabeck-Letmathe, Chairman of the Board of Nestlé, has slandered organic food on several occasions. Nestlé tripled their net profit from 2009 to 2010 ending 2010 with a net profit of 35.7 billion in US dollars. Mr. Brabeck-Letmathe earned his 10.7 million dollar share of that net profit in 2010. I have to be honest if I made that much money in one year, primarily depending on chemical agriculture I just might talk bad about organic food too. Wow! I just made my self happy that I don’t make 10.7 million a year, that’s weird. Lets quote Mr. Brabeck-Letmathe Continue reading »
