Environment – Is organic food the gold standard we are led to believe? We start in China, where scientists are making human milk from genetically modified cattle and insist it is as healthy to drink as that from ordinary cows. Back in France, we assess how organic farming stacks up against conventional methods while in Ecuador, several hundred farmers have taken arms against the multinationals who are using organic produce as a selling point. There is a form of milk that is much more dangerous than other milk. According to the Weston A. Price Foundation, this suspect kind of milk was linked to 10 times more cases of illnesses than the healthy kind from 1980 to 2005. Federal officials and authorities in 20 states have declared a milk war, but theyve mostly picked the wrong side. The Price Foundation reports it was pasteurized milk with the questionable record, while raw milk was the healthy alternative. Raw-Milk-Facts.com reports that "clean, raw milk from grass-fed cows was actually used as a medicine in the early part of the last century." In fact, the use of raw milk is documented back to the time of Hippocrates, the father of Greek medicine. But certain key enzymes, as well as beneficial bacteria such as Lactobacillus, are destroyed by the pasteurization process. Turning to the headlines, The Washington Times reported this past February, "Feds Shut Down Amish Farm for Selling Fresh Milk." There are countless stories like that, and it has caught the attention of US Senator Rand Paul, of Kentucky. He recently told fellow Senators, "I think we have bigger problems in our country without sending armed FDA agents onto peaceful farmers land and telling them they cant sell milk directly from the cow." This past week, Senator Paul offered an amendment to the Food and Drug Administration Safety and Innovation Act that would have stopped such raids, as well as harassment of health food stores. It failed by a vote <b>…<b>
Pasteurization is “a” way to prevent dangerous pathogens in milk; however it is not the only way. Raw milk producers are required to take several steps to ensure that the safety of the end product is equal to that of pasteurized milk. This is done without compromising the molecular structure or nutritional value of the milk.
pathogen is defined as a bacterium, virus, or other microorganism that can cause disease. Pasteurization is a cheap efficient way to make milk “safe” (in the short-term sense of the word). This allows farmers to mass-produce milk from 1000s of cows in unsanitary, inhumane conditions. It is done to lower the cost of production.Continue reading »

Story at-a-glance According to the US government’s own data, you are about 35,000 times more likely to get sick from other foods than you are from raw milk. Between 1999 and 2010, there were only an average of 42 cases of illness per year attributed to raw milk. Meanwhile, an estimated total of 48 million foodborne illnesses occur each year from all foods. Pasteurization protects you from deadly pathogens contained in CAFO milk. However, milk from free-range grass-fed cows does not need to be pasteurized as it is inherently less prone to contamination to begin with.Continue reading »
