The Incredible Story of Michael Schmidt and Dorothea Schmidt and Real Milk in Canada
by Sally Fallon
The city of Toronto spreads out from its center as an inundation of asphalt and grey rooftops, punctuated by soul-numbing high-rise apartments. Gradually the city gives way to farmland, dotted with small towns and pleasant farms, a land of richness and variety. The farms are attractive and well ordered, with old-fashioned barns and silos in good repair. The only jarring note is the occasional pile of old tires cluttered against the outbuildings. Follow the road northeast through the town of Durham and eventually you arrive at Glencolton Farms with its stone farmhouse, compact farmyard and painterly vistas.
The owners are Michael and Dorothea Schmidt who purchased Glencolton when they came to Canada from Germany in 1983. Michael Schmidt is an innovator and an activist. He grew up in the Waldorf education system and has a master’s degree in farming. His entire practical training took place on certified organic farms in Germany.
In 1978 Schmidt started a biodynamic organic dairy farm in southern Germany. This farm became the first certified organic farm with cheese processing facilities and today cheese from this farm is distributed throughout Germany. Three years later, Schmidt helped establish the first biodynamic organic farm in Egypt, supplying breeding stock for dairy cows. Today this Egyptian experiment is a flourishing research center and community farm. In recent years he has helped train Russian farmers in the principles of biodynamic farming and has participated in a research project in China. Continue reading »
I originally found this cartoon on mercola.com and just had to share it with our readers. I would like to take a moment to explain the name given to the town in the cartoon. “The Town of Allopath” adds humor if you understand it. Allopathic medicine is a term meaning the same thing as conventional, western or modern medicine. The term “allopath” means different or suffering. This was coined by the father of homeopathy, Samuel Hahnemann. Homeopath means similar or suffering and the term is directly related to the main concept of homeopathic remedies which is like cure like. The origin of allopath is simply based on being the opposite of homeopath.
If you have read some of our articles you may have noticed that we use conventional medicine, western medicine and modern medicine when referring to the pharmaceutical driven medicine of present day. However we never use the terms allopathy, allopathic or allopath. Allopath has been widely adopted by people of alternative medicine and used as a derogatory term for conventional medicine. Although we have strong feelings against the way conventional medicine has become, we choose not to employ the word allopath. I do think naming the town in the cartoon allopath is very funny!
Navigating through the world of food labels on packaged foods can be a difficult feat. Even when you think you are getting healthy foods, you could be wrong. Below is an article found on shine from yahoo that can help you understand food labels on packaged foods better.
The words written on food packaging are a contract between you and the manufacturer, as mandated by the federal government via the FDA. Many food producers hire lawyers that help them craft words to get you to buy their products while toeing the line of legality. Here are a few common package proclamations that you should look out for, and what they really mean. Continue reading »

Found on fda.gov:
Prescription Drug User Fee Act (PDUFA)
The Prescription Drug User Fee Act (PDUFA) was enacted in 1992 and renewed in 1997 (PDUFA II), 2002 (PDUFA III), and 2007 (PDUFA IV). It authorizes FDA to collect fees from companies that produce certain human drug and biological products. Since the passage of PDUFA, user fees have played an important role in expediting the drug approval process. Continue reading »
I just took action, telling President Obama to dump Monsanto super lobbyist and FDA Food Safety Czar Michael Taylor.
Under President Obama, factory farm operators are getting away with serious food safety violations while raw milk dairy farmers and distributors across the country have been subjected to armed raids and hauled away in handcuffs.
When Barack Obama ran for President he promised to end the “revolving door” between agribusiness lobbyists and government and to “regulate” factory farms. Unfortunately his decision to break both these campaign promises has left America’s food supply more vulnerable to food safety outbreaks and allowed the highly consolidated industrial meat and factory farm industry off the hook despite growing problems. Pasteurization is “a” way to prevent dangerous pathogens in milk; however it is not the only way. Raw milk producers are required to take several steps to ensure that the safety of the end product is equal to that of pasteurized milk. This is done without compromising the molecular structure or nutritional value of the milk.
pathogen is defined as a bacterium, virus, or other microorganism that can cause disease. Pasteurization is a cheap efficient way to make milk “safe” (in the short-term sense of the word). This allows farmers to mass-produce milk from 1000s of cows in unsanitary, inhumane conditions. It is done to lower the cost of production. Continue reading »
News reported by Alliance for Natural Health (August 9, 2011) — Public Outraged over Armed Raid of Food Co-op — Federal and state teams arrest people at gunpoint, destroy food, and seize assets—all because they’re afraid of unpasteurized milk and cheese. Please don’t let them trample the Constitution this way—a new Action Alert! On August 2, there was an armed raid on Rawesome Foods in Venice, California, conducted jointly by the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Office, the FDA, the Department of Agriculture, and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. You may recall that we reported about a similar FDA raid on the same co-op last year.

Boy this is just too much! And as I said I am trying so hard to not turn it into Leon’s Thought for Politics! If I bite my tongue any harder it will fall off! I think I am going to have to add a “Politics” category. Let me know what you think in the comment box.
