Welcome to the Alimentary Tuesdays Blog Carnival!

Well it is that time of week again. The week has past so quickly. We had 9 participants in our very 1st blog hop. Thank you so much to all of the participants. We look forward to seeing their new posts.

I want to take a moment to share part of my weekend. It was Jacobs 7th birthday celebration. His b-day is today 11-01 HAPPY BIRTHDAY JACOB! One of Jacobs birthday wishes was to have a Shockwave (one of the Decepticons from the Transformers cartoon and movie) cake. We always bake our own cakes to be sure the ingredients are organic. So this was a fun task (Shockwave is one of my favorites too). I will share my personalized cake making experience in a future post but here are some images to give you an idea. Continue reading »

cantaloupe
Apparently the Listeria out break has been traces back to a packing shed. The unsanitary conditions were found at Jensen Farms in Granada, Colo. Government investigators tracked the bacteria to this shed and found the Listeria pathogen on a conveyor belt for carrying cantaloupes, a melon drying area and a floor drain, among other places.

“You’re rolling around cantaloupe on uncleanable equipment and you’re getting it wet and you’re not cooling it — it provides the perfect environment for listeria growth and spread,” said James Gorny, a senior food safety adviser at the Food and Drug Administration.

The is the deadliest foodborne outbreak since 1985. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, a of 123 people in 26 states have fallen ill and 25 have died. Continue reading »

Leon picking the big apple in the sky

I mentioned in my last post that yesterday was family apple picking day. To prepare for this I searched the internet for a place in the Hudson Vally where we could pick our own organic apples. The information that I found led me to believe this was not possible. It was my understanding that climate of the northeast made it almost impossible to produce totally organic apples.  Since I knew that New York had organic apples, I came to the conclusion that there weren’t any farms that allowed you to pick your own apples that were organic. There is a lot of medicine out there. But did you know that foods can cure some maladies? Wouldn’t you rather go to the supermarket than go to a doctor? Here is a list of health expert Joy Bauer’s favorite food cures on everydayhealth.com.

Alleviate Aches: Ginger

This pungent, spicy root contains chemicals that work similarly to some anti-inflammatory medications, so it has potential to help relieve arthritis pain. If you’re dealing with aching joints, try adding a hit of ginger to your menu every day. Getting your daily dose can be as easy as steeping a few slices of ginger root in hot water to make a delicious “tea.” Also try grating fresh ginger into stir-fries or stews, and adding fresh or ground ginger to smoothies, oatmeal, or a healthy muffin or fruit crisp recipe. Or nibble on a slice or two of crystallized ginger to satisfy a sweet craving after dinner. Continue reading »

I was recently asked what my thoughts were on detoxing. I believe they were speaking about a healthy cleanse and not rehab. I assume this because I was asked to post an article about it here on our site.

Detoxing is often used to remove toxins out of your body. This can be done through cleansing the liver, the bowel, the blood, and other organs. It is sometimes used in conjunction with fasting. The liver regulates most chemical levels in the blood and excretes a product called bile, which helps to break down fats, preparing them for further digestion and absorption. All of the blood leaving the stomach and intestines passes through the liver. The liver processes this blood and breaks down the nutrients and drugs in the blood into forms that are easier to use for the rest of the body. More than 500 vital functions have been identified with the liver. When the liver has broken down harmful substances, they are excreted into the bile or blood. Bile by-products enter the intestine and ultimately leave the body in the feces. Blood by-products are filtered out by the kidneys and leave the body in the form of urine. When the liver is filled up with toxins, blood from the portal vein cannot enter, and it becomes swollen and enlarged, resulting in congestion of all glands, muscles, joints and body structures. This is due to the portal hypertension that blocks the return of blood on time, from the veins. Arteries carry blood away from the heart; veins carry blood back to the heart. Continue reading »
