In earlier posts I have mentioned the importance of proper nutrition. Some of the information I provided has related to digestion. Today I want to focus on some digestive system facts. I believe that eating a nutritionally rich diet is only half of the battle. In other words, what good is putting the right stuff in your body if you can’t absorb it? Or worse yet, it may be causing harm. There are several mechanisms of digestion.  Lets get acquainted with them. Not only does food affect digestion, but digestion affects food. Let’s look at how they affect each other.

Digestive System Fact # 1 – Digestive Enzymes are Needed to Digest Food

So what do digestive enzymes do?

Digestive enzymes are used to break polymeric macromolecules down to the smaller building blocks that make them up. This is done in order for them to be absorbed into the body. Digestive enzymes are found in the digestive tract of humans. They are also found inside the cells. This is especially true in lysosomes where they function to maintain cellular survival. There are an array of digestive enzymes. These are predominantly found in the mouth, stomach and small intestine. There are enzymes present in the large intestines as well. Salivary glands produce enzymes in the mouth. Secretory cells produce enzymes in the stomach and the pancreas, Secretory glands produce enzymes in the small intestine. Enzymes are activated and deactivated by different PH levels. This causes different enzymes to be active at different points of the digestive track. Continue reading »

Welcome to the Alimentary Tuesdays Blog Carnival!

Well it is that time of week again. The week has past so quickly. We had 9 participants in our very 1st blog hop. Thank you so much to all of the participants. We look forward to seeing their new posts.

I want to take a moment to share part of my weekend. It was Jacobs 7th birthday celebration. His b-day is today 11-01 HAPPY BIRTHDAY JACOB! One of Jacobs birthday wishes was to have a Shockwave (one of the Decepticons from the Transformers cartoon and movie) cake. We always bake our own cakes to be sure the ingredients are organic. So this was a fun task (Shockwave is one of my favorites too). I will share my personalized cake making experience in a future post but here are some images to give you an idea. Continue reading »

A woman in need of tooth pain relief

Many people have tooth pain. But going to the dentist is expensive. You can’t go to the dentist every time you need tooth pain relief, especially if the pain isn’t too bad. You might need to deal with the pain for days while you wait for an appointment or you might just not like going to the dentist. I have found that there are natural ways to deal with this pain relief. There are two natural remedies that seem to work the best, even if it is temporary. These solutions are cheap and it is easy to get the ingredients.

1) Clove Oil Compress
Clove oil contains eugenol, which is a natural pain killer and an antibacterial. Mix 2 to 3 drops of pure clove oil with 1/4 teaspoon olive oil. Saturate a cotton ball with the mixture and place the cotton ball beside the tooth. Continue reading »

Cancer is a very important category here at Organically Thought. Thanks to Jen of “A Misplaced Trust”, I found this very informative post on the Susan G. Komen Foundation. I was already aware that our health was being compromised based on profit in the pharmaceutical driven medicine of today. I also believe this to be true for finding a cure for cancer. Below you will find an excerpt from a post written by Emily of “Butter Believer”. She did an amazing job researching some numbers that really put the “non” profit organization in perspective.

I Will Not Be Pinkwashed: Why I Do Not Support Susan G. Komen for the Cure

October 22, 2011

By

[I'll admit. I'm a little nervous to put this one out there. The closest I've come to writing anything super controversial has been standing up for my beloved, saturated-fat-laden butter. And this is obviously something much more serious. But it's something I feel I absolutely have to say, and I hope you'll listen with an open mind.]

Pinkwashing America

It’s October.
And that means, it’s prime pink season. It’s national “Breast Cancer Awareness Month.”
It’s that magical time of the year when shades of pale pink are plastered onto every product, every container, every conceivable gadget or gizmo that the Susan G. Komen Foundation can get their hands on.
When that iconic symbol of overlapped ribbon is supposed to adorn every man, woman, and child who ever had a mother, grandmother, sister, daughter, niece or aunt who faced the horrifying struggle of breast cancer.
But I am not buying it.

Welcome to the Alimentary Tuesdays Blog Carnival!

al·i·men·ta·ry adj \ˌa-lə-ˈmen-t(ə-)rē\

  1. of or relating to nourishment or nutrition
  2. furnishing sustenance or maintenance

Here at Organically Thought we cover several different topics. These topics share the common bond of health. Much of the time we attribute health with nutrition. We spend time exploring the anti-pharmaceutical approaches to preventative and corrective medicine. Our posts involve some type of food or food component. Many holistic medicine systems employ the use of these foods. It can be determined that there is a strong connection between health and nutrition. The internet along with the blog-o-sphere is a powerful tool for sharing and obtaining information.

We are hosting this blog carnival to help create new information sharing paths. A blog carnival is a post on the hosting blog with the option for visiting bloggers to leave a link to one of their blog’s posts. It is usually focused on one specific topic. All bloggers that submit their link choose one that pertains to that subject. Then the visiting blogger shares a link to this post with their readers. This is done by putting the link in the post that was submitted to the blog carnival. Continue reading »
